It will be a VERY grim Christmas

Yesterday, the US reported almost a quarter of a million new cases of Covid-19 (237,328). With yesterday's mortality rate, that means roughly another 4,500 people who will not live to see Christmas, another 4,500 families who will be grieving rather than celebrating.

1 in every 22 people in the US have been infected with Covid-19
1 in every 1,152 people in the US have died due to Covid-19 and complications caused by it.

1 in every 56 people in the US CURRENTLY are infected with Covid-19
That is another 112,980 people who are going to die.

Be safe people.

Here in Florida, our governor claims that mask mandates don't work and so he is preventing local authorities from enforcing their own mask mandates in the absence of any leadership from above. Florida also has the 3rd highest number of Covid-19 cases and the 4th highest number of deaths in the United States.

1 in every 21 Floridians have been infected
1 in every 1,134 Floridians have died.

1 in every 60 people in Florida are CURRENTLY infected with Covid-19
That is another 6,562 people who are going to die.

Still our governor refuses to do anything other than let us die. He won't even mandate the vaccine when available. Instead the virus will be allowed to spread through the state like wildfire - continuing to kill.

All because the mighty dollar comes first in Florida.

My letter to Governor DeSantis,

Governor DeSantis,

You are killing us, LITERALLY, through your refusal to take action. That you do not “believe” that mask mandates work is wholly immaterial, science has shown that they do. In October, I emailed you, urging you to put a mask mandate in place while the numbers were improving. Instead, you have continued to prevent local governments from protecting their citizens.

Florida, under YOUR “leadership” is #3 in Covid-19 infections in the US and #4 in deaths. That is YOUR doing Mr. Governor, that is YOUR failure to lead. At the time of this writing, 1 in every 60 Floridians are CURRENTLY infected with Covid-19.

1 in 60.

That is a roughly 6,500 more families who will be grieving, rather than celebrating, this holiday season. That is in the addition to the 19,084 families in Florida who have lost loved ones to your inaction.

You are killing us.

You are unfit to lead.

You should step down immediately and allow your Lt. Governor to take over in the hope that HE will put the people of Florida before his political ambitions. You have failed us, the voters of Florida. It is time for you to accept responsibility for your failures.

I have no illusions that my letter will be received by anything but deaf ears, but at least I tried...again. Nothing will get through to him short of the complete collapse of those around him. In the meantime, he continues killing us.

Not a lot of joy to be found right now. Things are only going to get worse in the coming days.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation has released a report detailing a number of sobering figures.

Last week, Covid-19 was the #1 cause of death in the US. It will continue to be so for the rest of the year.

Despite vaccination scale-up, we expect 539,000 cumulative deaths by April 1, with peak daily deaths reaching 3,000 in mid-to-late January.

Scaling up mask use to 95% can save 66,000 lives by April 1.

Wear your damned mask!
