Remembering 9/11 during a time of Global pandemic
Twenty years....it seems impossible that it has been twenty years since the towers fell and the world changed forever. There are people in college born after that world-changing event, that never experienced what (for us) was the world as normal.
We have been at war for twenty years because of those attacks. Those visceral, gut-wrenching attacks, that we watched play out on live television. 2,996 people died that day.
We united.
We stood.
The sleeping giant was awakened.
In the US, 1,761 people died of Covid yesterday. 677,017 Americans have died since the outbreak.
We are fractured.
We whine.
We cannot be bothered.
I guess, if people dying on ventilators were televised, maybe more of the average Americans would give a damn. 54% vaccinated....
Meanwhile, here in Florida, 1 in every 21 Floridians CURRENTLY has Covid and our governor takes PRIDE in how "open" our state it. We are dying down here. Children are dying down here...but he's still attacking schools for requiring masks.
Gut-wrenching as September 11th was (and it was horrific), looking back during a time of crisis merely serves to remind us of one, while overshadowing the present.
I remember, and I will never forget but, here in America, during this crisis we refuse to change. It doesn't seem to matter how many people die. Can you imagine? We marched to war for 20 years, toppled governments in response to an attack that killed less than 3,000 people but Americans aren't willing to wear a mask in response to something that has killed close to three quarters of a million Americans.
Can you imagine if any politician had been SUPPORTIVE of the 9/11 attacks, let alone an entire political party. But, here we are, the Republican party continuing to fight against the measures that would save the lives of their fellow Americans.
Can you imagine if an American network had been spreading pro-Bin Ladin propaganda in the wake of the attacks? Well, FOX News continues to spread disinformation that is LITERALLY killing people.
Our country's divide only appears to be a political one. In actuality, one side is knowingly killing us in the name of politics. It used to be a joke that, to get anything done, President Obama would just need to demand the opposite so that the contrarian Republicans would do what he wanted.
It isn't a joke anymore. Literally, saving people's lives is less important than opposing the other political party. Remember how this was going to "magically disappear" by last August?
So, while the Republicans gnash their teeth, beat their chests, and tear their hair in "memory" of 9/11? Maybe remind them of the 677,017 dead Americans that they don't give a shit about.
Then tell them to shut the fuck up.
You don't get to claim to honor America's dead while willfully and deliberately contributing to their number by lying to the public about how this isn't a danger.
Check your title. The word Global has two g's.
