Disasters in Slow Motion: Today's Covid Information (December 31, 2020 23:38 GMT)

The end of 2020, hard to imagine that it is here. The numbers are catastrophic, and the vaccine rollout in the US is going horribly slow - and that is before a hospital employee intentionally destroyed 500 doses of vaccine . Such a think seems unimaginable but...here we are. We have Congressmen and Senators who have downplayed Covid-19 from the beginning (like Florida's Marc Rubio) who are at the front of the line to be vaccinated - despite the number of deaths that they took part in causing. It is enough to make you lose faith in humanity. Happy New Year right? Anyhow, here is where we stand in the US...and it is pretty awful. United States - Population: 331,022,651 Cases: 20,415,959 Infected: 1 in 16 Deaths: 353,671 Death Rate: 1 in 936 Mortality Rate: 1.73%   Alabama - Population: 4,908,620 Cases: 361,226 Infected: 1 in 14 Deaths: 4,827 Death Rate: 1 in 1,017 Mortality Rate: 1.34%  Alaska - Population: 735,720 Cases: 45,461 Infected: 1 in 16 Deaths: 205 Death Rat...

On the matter of Kingpin DeSantis

I really hadn't expected to post again today. While there is always news out there, I don't want Covid-19 to overwhelm my life and sanity. But this? This needs a post. Early on in the pandemic, a Florida scientist by the name of Rebekah Jones setup the Covid-19 tracking site for the state of Florida. She was told to falsify the data to make the numbers look lower so that Florida could reopen. She blew the whistle...and was fired. Since then she began her own site to track the data in Florida, wholly independent of the State. Today, her home was raided at gunpoint . Police seized all of her computers as well as her phone. This is a bald-faced attempt by Governor DeSantis to continue covering up the truth - the Florida needs to be shut down. They also seized her documentations of political corruption having to do with complaints she had made. They came in and took it all away. This should not happen. This is wholly unacceptable in the United States. The Governor of Florida is a...

On the Subject of Facts

You likely don't know me, and I don't recommend that anyone take the word of "some guy" on the internet without some big grains of salt. That is why you will often see hyperlinks in my posts - showing exactly which sources my information is coming from. I feel it is important that readers can verify what I'm saying and then judge for themselves if they feel the source is trustworthy or not. I try to stay with reputable and respected sources, but how one feels about such things can vary widely. Trust, but verify. I try to make that as easy as possible.

On the Subject of Mortality Rates

Prior to my launching this blog, I'd had people ask which figures I used for mortality rates, and why. There are two primary methods... Deaths ÷ Total Cases, expressed as a percentage - (D÷(TC÷100) = %  Deaths ÷ Closed Cases, expressed as a percentage - (D÷(CC÷100) = %   Now, it is important to understand that it can be said that either number is only accurate to the numbers reported. Neither factors in unreported cases or deaths, and I never try to extrapolate that sort of information. I am not an epidemiologist. I am not qualified to do so.  Closed Cases, while appearing to represent a truer mortality rate, instead accelerates deaths versus cases. Deaths are reported as soon as they happen, but it can take weeks for someone to be declared Covid free. These things are not reported at the same frequency. This makes for a MUCH higher number, and is not the number used by the WHO or CDC. As things progress, that number begins to rapidly come down. Based on the figure...

With yesterday's mortality rate, that means roughly another 4,500 people who will not live to see Christmas, another 4,500 families who will be grieving rather than celebrating. 1 in every 22 people in the US have been infected with Covid-19 1...
